Kelly Wood has extensive experience within the specialized field of beginners yoga and kids yoga, adapted specifically for school settings (E-RYT-200, RCYT, RPYT). Since 2002, she has successfully taught both adult yoga and children’s yoga in Los Angeles. She created one of the first Kids Yoga Teacher Trainings accredited by Yoga Alliance called Hi Yoga. Her signature approach to children’s yoga is also available to Los Angeles Unified School District educators as professional development (1 salary point). The SCHOOL Kids Yoga & Mindfulness Teacher Training is expertly designed for classrooms (mostly elementary with adaptations for middle and high school) and is classroom-proven with over 16 years of Kelly’s weekly teaching experience in public and private classrooms.
Her personal yoga and meditation practice extends more than twenty-four years. Having taught over 25,000 hours in public and private schools, as well as in her own studio, Kelly Wood remains dedicated to helping adults, parents, teachers, and children. Since 2002, Kelly has volunteered her time in Los Angeles public elementary schools, currently teaching over 1,000 children each week. She has taught more than 225,000 children ages 4-11. Additionally, Kelly has conducted Parent & Baby classes with children ranging from infant up through preschooler. Smiling Calm Hearts Open Our Learning, Inc. (SCHOOL)
In 2012, Kelly established the nonprofit, Smiling Calm Hearts Open Our Learning, Inc. (SCHOOL) to support the growing need for secular yoga-based mindfulness tools for positive classroom environments. She is an expert children’s yoga teacher, one of the pioneers of yoga-based methods within the public school systems. With a hand-select crew that she has personally trained, Kelly is committed to enriching the lives of the underserved children in Los Angeles County.
Kelly Wood’s teaching style is unique due to the emphasis on simplicity of words, movement, and meaning. Unlike the commercial approach to yoga as a stretching workout, Kelly continues to honor the tradition by including both the philosophical and physical aspects of the practice, while placing priority on the breath as the gateway to physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Her love of storytelling is included within her classes as Kelly shares personal experiences to facilitate the understanding of yoga and meditation for daily living. Meaning, memory, and motivation are taught through the use of movement in her classes.
Her first series of books is scheduled for publication in spring 2015, highlighting popular stories that Kelly shares with children during Kids Yoga classes. Kelly’s stories illustrate the value of listening, making good choices, and helping others. Not only for children to read on their own, these stories are intended for parents and children to enjoy together and also for public school teachers to read to their students. This innovative book series also includes simple postures/meditations for children to practice on their own, for parents and children to practice together, and for classrooms to practice as a group. Simple art projects for children are another unique feature of Kelly’s book series.
